Eagles News · Eagles Lose Road Heartbreaker

ROCHESTER HILLS, MI (January 22, 2019) – In their High School Girls Basketball Weekly Preview, the State Champs Network identified tonight’s game between PCA and Lutheran Northwest as one of the key games of the week.  This contest certainly lived up to the billing, although the PCA faithful came away disappointed as the host Crusaders topped the Eagles, 34-33.

PCA started strong, taking a 7-1 lead with hoops from Harlee Collins and Rachel Costello. The Eagles were strong on the defensive end, utilizing a “big” line-up and limiting Lutheran NW to one and done possessions.

After the first quarter, PCA had a 10-point lead, 13-3.

The Crusaders did not fold in the second quarter. They rebounded by turning up their pressure defense and forcing PCA into several turnovers. Lutheran NW chipped away and took their first lead of the night, 18-17 with under a minute left in the half. That score stood and both teams went to the halftime break.

Harlee Collins paced the Eagles in the first half with 7 points. Anna Fernandez had 5, Rachel Costello had 3 and Ariela Boboc had 2.

Coming out of the break, the question for Eagle fans was, “Which team will come out for the second half? The team from the first quarter or the second.”

In the third quarter, it was a little bit of both. Lutheran Northwest extended their lead to five, 27-22, even though PCA improved defensively. The Crusaders shot the ball well, controlled the offensive glass and tracked down several loose balls.

The fourth quarter began slowly but PCA started to cut into the lead with 3:22 left. The Crusaders led 33-28 and added a free throw to make it 34-30.

Harlee Collins made two free throws of her own to trim the lead to 34-30.

Both teams could not find the net until Collins hit a three with :26 seconds left to cut the lead to one, 34-33.

A Lutheran NW player was fouled with 17:5 seconds left. The first shot rimmed away, but the Crusaders retained possession and called time out.

On the inbounds play, the Lutheran NW player missed their lay up and PCA grabbed the rebound and pushed it up court. The Eagles had good looks at a three-pointer and the subsequent put back, but both shots just rimmed out and the horn sounded.

PCA just ran out of time in this Mid-January classic, and lost the league battle, 34-33.

State Champs got their prediction right – this WAS a game of the week.
