CANTON, MI (March 4, 2019) – There’s an adage in sports that says that it’s tough to beat a team three times in the same season. Well, tonight that’s exactly what happened. PCA had beaten the visiting Warriors from Novi Christian in their two previous meetings this year, but in the first round of the Districts, NCA came away with a 51-46 victory.
The Warriors were led by two of their seniors, Rachel Bauze and Chanelle Lochrie. They torched the Eagles with 18 and 16 respectively. Bauze did most of her damage inside, off pick and rolls and Lochrie from three-point range.
After one, Novi Christian led, 10-8. The Eagles were led by Ariela Boboc and Anna Fernandez in the first.
Both teams looked tense. They knew it was win or go home.
Solid defense was played by both teams, with little or no transition opportunities.
The second half was wide open. Novi led 28-22 and exposed PCA’s press. They passed over it and cut to the rim with Bauze capitalizing on the space.
Bauze led NCA with 14 points at the half. Lochrie chipped in with 8.
The Eagles were led by Anna Fernandez with 13, Ariela Boboc with 5 and Eva Warmbier and Sarah Fernandes with 2 a piece.
Novi increased their lead in the 3rd quarter, outscoring PCA, 14-11. With one quarter remaining, PCA trailed 42-33.
The Eagles had cut the lead to 4, but a late run by NCA featuring a three-pointer by Anna Bosnack and a lay-in by Lochrie built the lead back to nine.
PCA refused to go gently. With pressure on the Novi Christian backcourt, the Eagles cut into the lead. But the Warriors held on to an eight-point lead. With 1:05 to go, NCA led, 51-41.
Two baskets later, the PCA faithful saw a glimpse of hope. A Boboc free throw cut the lead to 51-46, but there was only :18 seconds remaining.
Novi Christian ran out the clock and came away with the win, 51-46.
