This past Saturday, the Eagles hosted 3 schools from Northern Michigan in what is becoming a traditional event. Onaway, Inland Lakes and Newberry High Schools traveled 5+ hours for some of their first outside play this weekend. Newberry is in the U.P. about an hour North of the bridge and Onaway and Inland Lakes are from here (I’m pointing about an inch below the tip of my right index finger on my palm).
We started the day at 9am versus Inland Lakes. While I was putting the final touches on the field prior to the game, I over heard one of their players say, “We get to play baseball today! It’s been so long!”. Currently all 3 teams have snow on their fields. Norbie Fernandez finally got to play shortstop as we waited for Nathan to finish the ACT. Isaiah Stockman held Lakes down for 5 innings, but had to be lifted in the 6th due to pitch count. Norbie Fernandez came in for the final inning and after a couple errors, Lakes had put 4 runs on the board to lead 5-1. Then it was the Eagles turn to bat, Evan Loiselle led off the inning with his 1st High School hit and Caleb Cameron pitch ran and reached 3 on consecutive wild pitches. Christian Southerland then walked and stole 2nd base. Nathan Etnyre grounded out to short scoring Caleb and moving Chris over to 3rd. Norbie Fernandez reached on an error scoring Chris and Isaiah Stockman singled. Norbie then scored on Gabe Emilio’s groundout and finished the Eagles scoring 1 run short of tying the game.
At 1pm, the Eagles took on Newberry with Gabe Emilio on the hill. Gabe fought through some control issues in the 1st, but only allowed 1 run before settling in and handling the Indians for the rest of game, only allowing 2 total runs for a complete game win. Jacob Weertz and Gabe both scored in the 2nd, reaching base on a walk and a Hit-By-Pitch respectively. Jacob was brought home by a groundout by Mario Cassel and Gabe by a single from A-Aron Geisler. In the 3rd, after the Eagles loaded the bases, Zeke scored when Nate was Hit-By-Pitch and Jake scored on a ground out by Aaron. Final was a 4-2 Eagles victory.
Then at 5, the Eagles took on Onaway. After spotting Onaway 3 in the 1st, the Eagles batted around, scoring 8 on 2 doubles from Nate Etnyre, a double by Jacob Weertz, 2 singles by Isaiah and 1 by Joey Radabaugh. After spotting Onaway 5 runs in the 2nd, the Eagles added 2 in the 2nd with Jake and Gabe scoring for a 10-8 lead. It stayed that way until the 5th, when Onaway scored 1, but Christian Southerland slammed the door and the Eagles came away with a 10-9 win.
On the day, Isaiah Stockman collected 4 hits, although he believes he was a couple of lucky plays away from a 6-hit day. Nathan Etnyre had 3 hits including 2 doubles; Aaron Geisler, Christian Southerland and Jacob Weertz each collected 2 hits with Norbie Fernandez, Evan Loiselle and Joey Radabaugh each getting 1 hit.
It was a great day of baseball and everyone was very happy to be playing. This was Newberry’s 1st day playing outside and Inland Lakes’ 5th. The Eagles are back to conference play Tuesday at Lutheran Westland.
