Boys Varsity Wrestling · PCA Students Thriving in New Wrestling Co-Op

This past school year, the PCA Regent Board, the MIAC Conference, and the MHSAA all approved for PCA to partner with Lutheran Westland in a wrestling cooperative starting in the 2019-2020 winter season. PCA is no stranger to a partnership with Lutheran Westland as the Athletic Departments just completed year number 4 with the football cooperative. Now, a couple months into the season, our 3 PCA athletes are enjoying their experience and finding success as well! If you are looking for an opportunity to cheer them on, set your calendar to Wednesday, February 5th at 5:30 pm at Lutheran Westland!

Brody Gibson, Joey Weertz, and Noah Etnyre share with us a little insight, their experience so far:

Noah Etnyre- Freshman:

How many years have you been wrestling? This is my first year in a long time, but I wrestled for about 4 years when I was little.
What is your weight class this season? I started out at 152, but moved to 145.

How is the season going? Team/Individual Record? Any stories with specific matches? The season is going great! The team is doing well, we won the Tuomi Championship (a tournament between Lutheran North, Lutheran Northwest, and Lutheran Westland) and we are 7-4 so far. Individually I am 5-1 in 145 and 4-2 in 152. A highlight for the season so far is beating Northwest, (a rival of ours) twice; once at the Tuomi Championship, and once at our own Warrior Invite.

What are you enjoying most about the Co-Op? Its great to be with a lot of the same kids that I played football with along with the other PCA guys.

How can students and staff best support and cheer you on at future matches?  Just come to have fun and support the team! We have meets every Wednesday and Saturday so there aren’t usually basketball games. If you’re free, just come out and have fun watching us wrestle!

Joey Weertz- Freshman:

How many years have you been wrestling?
I’ve been wrestling for three years.
What is your weight class this season?
I am wrestling in the 130 pound weight class.

How is the season going? Team/Individual Record? Any stories with specific matches?

The season is going good, my individual record is 8-4.

What are you enjoying most about the Co-Op?

I’m enjoying getting to know kids outside of our school.
How can students and staff best support and cheer you on at future matches?
Coming to the meets and supporting us during our weekend tournaments and meets.
