Multiple Teams · Isabel Mossel Named 2020 MHSAA Scholar Athlete Finalist

This year, 1,493 applications were received for the MHSAA Scholar Athlete Award. The list has been cut 120 finalists announced yesterday by the MHSAA and our very own Isabel Mossel is one of them! Izzy is a tremendous student-athlete who participates in Cross Country, Basketball, and Softball at PCA. To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale) and previously have won a varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament. Students also were asked to respond to a series of short essay questions, submit two letters of recommendation and a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

According to the MHSAA, of the 120 finalists, 86 finalists played at least 3 sports for their school. The next step is to select 32 student-athletes who will be awarded the $1000 scholarship. Of the 32 total scholarships being awarded, four scholarships will be awarded to Class D student-athletes, two female and two male. In addition, two scholarships will be awarded at-large to minority recipients, regardless of school size. Izzy is one of eight finalists in the Class-D female category and is also eligible to at-large category for minority students.

The applications were judged by a 66-member committee of school coaches, counselors, faculty members, administrators and board members from MHSAA member schools. Selection of the 32 scholarship recipients will take place in early February. Class C and D scholarship recipients will be announced Feb. 4th on the MHSAA Website. To honor the 32 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients, a ceremony will take place during halftime of the MHSAA Division 3 Boys Basketball Final, March 28 at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.

Congratulations to Izzy on being named a finalist! We are already so proud of what you have accomplished on the athletic field/court and in the classroom. Your leadership and humility are second to none and we are proud to have you in our Eagle Family!
