Girls Varsity Basketball · PCA Returns to Court, tops Lakers

CANTON, MI (February 8, 2021) – In the first girls basketball game of 2021, the Eagles topped the visiting Lakers from Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, 61-53 in a game played at the Butler Gymnasium tonight.

The Eagles won every quarter and looked polished on both offense and defense.

Morganne Houk led the Purple and Gold with 33 points. Anna Fernandez had 17 and Ariela Boboc had 5.

The first quarter featured plenty of action with very few turnovers even though it was the season opener for both schools. PCA used a solid inside/outside offensive game to take a 16-15 lead after one.

The Eagles pushed their lead to 10 late in the second quarter but two late hoops by OLL closed the gap as the game went to halftime. PCA still led, 32-26.

PCA locked down on the defensive side in the second quarter and were led offensively by Morganne Houk who pulled off a spin-a-rama, twisting lay-up that had the small crowd of parents gasping.

The Lakers would not go away. PCA pushed their lead to 10 only to see OLL fight right back. Houk made a couple of threes in the third but Waterford kept hitting threes of their own. After three quarters, PCA led 45-38.

Once again, the Eagles built their lead to double digits only to see the Lakers chip away. OLL cut the lead to four, but two tough defensive stops kept the momentum on the side of the Purple and Gold.

Houk hit a three with 1:50 left to give the Eagles a nine-point lead and that was all that was needed. Fernandez and Boboc made two late free throws to seal the win, 61-53 PCA.

PCA hits the road on Tuesday to face Auburn Hills Oakland Christian. Tip is 7pm.
