Boys Varsity Basketball · Eagles Outlast Oakland Christian in OT

CANTON, MI (February 9, 2021) – Playing in the second game of a back-to-back, the PCA Eagles persevered and downed the visiting Lancers of Oakland Christian, 60-50 in OT.

Senior Nathan Etnyre paced PCA with 20 points. Seniors Evan Schalte 10pts, Nathan Sutrick 11pts, and Junior Chibi Anwunah 10 pts, provided double-digit contributions.

Coming off of a tough 10-point loss to Pinckney last night, the Eagles struggled to find their legs, trailing 7-0 early on. But three-pointers by Schalte and Etnyre sparked PCA to a 21-5 run and a 21-12 lead after the first quarter.

The Lancers found their defense in the second quarter, limiting PCA’s second chances and ramping up the physicality.

PCA got into foul trouble in the period and Oakland Christian took advantage, outscoring the Eagles 10-5 and cutting the Eagles lead to 26-22 at the half.

The Purple and Gold worked the boards in the third quarter and was able to push the ball in transition. Mason Houk and Etnyre had big baskets as the Eagles took a 40-31 lead into the final period.

Oakland Christian whittled the lead to 5 with 4:26 to go. The physical game stayed tight as the clock ran down.

The Lancers’ Blake Patterson, who finished with 21, hit a 2-pointer to cut the Eagle lead to two at 43-41. But Etnyre hit a three to extend the lead to five at 46-41 with 2:40 to play.

Oakland cut into the lead once again, 46-44 with 1:44 to go and with 1:31 left, Patterson went down with an apparent leg injury.

An Eagle turnover gave the Lancers the ball back with :52 seconds left, and Patterson checked back in. Oakland Christian could not inbound the ball but PCA turned it over and with :19 seconds remaining in the quarter, a Lancer put-back after a scrum under the basket, tied the game at 46-46.

PCA called time-out to set up a last second shot, but an Etnyre attempt rolled off the rim and the teams were headed to overtime.

The Eagles controlled the 4-minute OT session from the start. Etnyre drew a foul and gave the Eagles a lead after a free throw. He made another two-pointer and Schalte added another to give PCA a 51-46 lead.

Hard work under the boards paid off for Anwunah as he made two free throws and a three-point play to give the Eagles a 55-48 lead with 1:18 to go.

Nathan Sutrick built the lead to seven, 57-50 with a slick lay-up. And Etnyre sealed the game with three more free throws. PCA had earned a hard fought, 60-50 victory.
