CANTON, MI (February 15, 2021) – Perhaps PCA could petition the MHSAA to start their games in the second quarter or just pretend that the first eight minutes has already been played because PCA cannot afford to fall behind in these games. Another slow start put the Eagles behind the eight ball again as they dropped a winnable game to the visiting Eagles of Southfield Christian.
PCA had trouble handling Southfield’s pressure defense and found themselves down 10 points early in the first quarter and it felt like they were pushing a large boulder uphill. After one, PCA trailed 23-9.
The second quarter was dead even and it should not have been. PCA missed every conceivable shot – free throws, lay-ups and three pointers. Pry off the lid that was on the basket and the hometown Eagles could have tied the game if not taken the lead.
The Eagles trailed 34-20 at the half. Nathan Sutrick had eight at the break and Evan Schalte had six.
In the second half, PCA picked up their defensive play and had the lead cut to 10, mid-way through the third quarter. But Southfield Christian ramped up their offense, knocked down a couple of threes and went on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 46-26 with 1:57 left in the third.
PCA had difficulties rebounding and their shooting woes continued. After three quarters, PCA trailed 46-28.
The Purple and Gold would not quit, however. With solid offense from Nathan Sutrick and Evan Schalte, the Eagles cut into the lead and won the quarter, 18-14. But it was too little, too late as Southfield Christian held on for the 60-46 win.
Take away the first quarter and the game is all even. For tomorrow’s game against Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard, forget the first – start the game in the second. Tip time for the varsity is 7pm in the Butler Gymnasium, weather permitting.
Nathan Sutrick – 19 points
Evan Schalte – 11 points
Chibi Anwunah – 8 points
Nathan Etnyre – 7 points
