CANTON, MI (February 16, 2021) – PCA put on a furious second half rally but Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard held on for a 58-54 win tonight at the Butler Gymnasium.
Facing a tough Catholic League opponent, PCA stayed close in the first quarter. Spencer Mistele was inserted into the starting lineup to provide a spark at the small forward spot. The Eagles displayed energy in the first and knocked down their shots.
Nathan Etnyre’s three-pointer gave the Eagles a lead momentarily, but the Irish hit a late three to put them in front as the quarter ended, 14-12.
The second quarter proved to be a nightmare. Gabriel Richard dominated on the glass and started the quarter with a 17-0 run. They made their shots from three and found room underneath the basket with the use of some nifty back cuts. Only a Mario Cassar free throw late in the second stopped the Irish run.
At the half, the Eagles trailed 31-13.
The third quarter was totally different. The Eagles came out with a vengeance. On offense, PCA attacked the basket and were aggressive on the glass.
Evan Schalte, Nathan Sutrick and Etnyre made shots from distance and the entire team showed fire on defense. With a huge run, PCA cut the lead to five points after three quarters, 42-37.
Gabriel Richard matched the Eagles’ intensity early in the fourth and upped their lead to 49-40 with 3:26 left.
PCA was forced to take chances and ramp up their defense.
The Eagles cut the lead to eight with 1:48 left and whittled to five, 51-46, with 1:36 left.
Nathan Etnyre scored on a lay-up with :41 seconds left to pull the Eagles to within three, 54-51.
After a quick foul, AAGR went to the free throw line with :24 seconds left. Two makes pushed the lead to 56-51, but Christian Southerland hit a huge three to cut the lead to two, 56-54 with :3.5 seconds left.
A PCA foul with no time off the clock sent the Irish to the line – with hopes of a miss and miracle. The Eagles didn’t get either. Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard knocked down both free throw attempts and a last second triple from Nathan Sutrick fell short. AAGR hung on to win, 58-54.
The Eagles travel to Allen Park on Friday to tangle with Inter-City Baptist as part of a “Biggie Friday”. Tip time is set for 8:30pm.
