(Allen Park, MI) Feb. 19, 2021 The Eagles struggled early as Anna Fernandez and Morganne Houk combined for 4 of the teams 18 turnovers in the opening two minutes. The Chargers led 7-0 before freshman Allie Pilat scored in the paint. Senior Ariela Boboc scored a driving basket and two free throws in the quarter as well, but PCA trailed 6-15 as four different athletes scored baskets for the Chargers.
The Eagles regained their composure scoring 12 points in the second quarter which included 3’s from Fernandez and sophomore Grace Fernandes. Boboc continued her strong play adding two baskets of her own. Despite winning the quarter, the Eagles trailed 18-26 at the half.
“Ari’s aggressive play in the paint at both ends of the court was a difference maker,” said Coach Windle.
The game completely changed in the third as the Eagles held the Chargers to a single point in the third quarter. Houk hit her first basket, a three, to get the team rolling on offense. Fernandez and Boboc added to their totals as well giving the Eagles a 32-27 lead after three quarters.
“Our team defense kept us in the game tonight and helped our offense get on track,” said Coach Windle.
The Chargers went on a 10-6 run to begin the fourth quarter and cut the lead to 38-37.
Back to back baskets by freshman Kate Creighton and Fernandez gave the Eagles a 43-37 lead with 2:37 remaining in the game. Inter-City responded with a three of their own by Emma Hamilton to cut the Eagle lead to three points.
The Eagles passed and moved the ball around to work the clock down to 1:31 when Houk delivered the ball to sophomore Alivia Lavigne for a driving layup resulting in a 45-40 lead for the Eagles. A big steal by Fernandez resulted in an immediate foul and two made free throws to stretch the lead to seven.
With less than a minute left to play, the Eagles would get two more stops ending in key rebounds by Lavigne and Houk. Anna Fernandez would complete a three-point play on driving lay-up to finish with a game high 19 points and Morganne Houk would close out the scoring for the night making 1 of 2 free throws to make the final score 51-40.
The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in MIAC Blue Division league play.
The Eagles play at Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard on Monday at 7:00PM, at home at 6:00PM against Whitmore Lake on Tuesday, and at home on Friday at 5:00PM against Inter-City Baptist.
